West Valley NAACP challenges Peoria school district’s removal of three books

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The West Valley NAACP has filed a complaint against the Peoria Unified School District over the removal of three books from sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms.

The three books involve Black history. The district labeled them inappropriate for middle school. The novels are still available in high school.

Grades 6, 7 and 8 in PUSD will no longer read the books as part of the curriculum. The books are “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave,” and “Summer of the Mariposas.”
