ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs is expressing concerns about increased ICE activity in the Capital Region, especially after an Ecuadoran family was detained — and separated — in the city last week.
According to the Times Union, Kevin Ushiña, his wife, Veronica Saquillo, and their two children, ages 5 and 9, were apprehended on Aug. 10. The TU reported the family had been living in Albany for two years, but had withdrawn from the asylum process last year due to fears that one or more of the parents would be detained at a check-in. Detentions at asylum check-ins have happened at the Malta field office, as well as across the country.
Mayor Applyrs said, in a statement on social media: I am deeply unsettled to hear reports of increased ICE activity throughout the Capital Region, including a family of four that was recently detained in Albany. No parent or child should have to experience the trauma of being separated as a family. My heart is with this young family and all members of our community whose lives have been disrupted by ICE.…
