MARIETTA — As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, the Marietta Area Council used the milestone to look closer to home, highlighting the people and stories that have shaped the Gem City over the decades.
Amy Reed, director of the Marietta History Center, led the discussion during Wednesday’s meeting at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel and Conference Center, connecting the city’s history to the memories of two longtime residents: Pearl Freeman and Matt DeBusschere.
“When we’re thinking about America’s 250th, we think of the colonists, the Revolution, the Declaration of Independence — all these huge things that were a part of creating our country,” Reed said. “But at its core, every single one of those big events that you’ve heard … or read or seen about lately — they’re all local stories. … Here in Marietta, every single story that we have is just as important. It makes us who we are.”…
