Massive Nature Makeover in Massachusetts: A 100-Year Cranberry Farm Is Becoming a Wild Wetland Again

After more than a century of cranberry farming, a major ecological comeback is now underway in southeastern Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife announced that “construction has started to transform Century Bog into a healthy network of streams, wetlands, and native uplands,” a shift designed to restore natural water flow and rebuild habitat across a landscape that has long been shaped for agriculture. The agency emphasized the breadth of the benefits ahead: “From migratory fish to birds, amphibians, reptiles, pollinators, and plants, countless species stand to gain from the return of a more natural landscape.”
