Former Duke of York Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is reportedly feeling increasingly isolated from the royal family as his separation from royal duties continues to deepen.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital that while friends maintain regular contact with Andrew, he appears to be choosing to spend time abroad rather than joining the family’s traditional summer gathering at Balmoral. “Rather than spending the summer at Balmoral hidden away with the rest of the family, Andrew seems to be opting for time abroad with friends,” Chard said. “Allegedly, he feels abandoned by certain family members.”
Royal commentator Hilary Fordwich echoed this sentiment, describing Andrew as “no longer important” within the royal circle. “No one is very concerned about how he’s feeling,” Fordwich said, “but it’s important to ensure he doesn’t cause any more damage to the monarchy.”
A close friend of Andrew told The Sun that he feels like an outcast within the family. Although invited to Balmoral, Andrew reportedly declined, believing he would be treated as an outsider during the much-anticipated holiday. “He feels like an elephant in the room,” the friend explained.
Andrew’s retreat from royal life began in 2019 following a controversial BBC “Newsnight” interview addressing his association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Subsequently, in 2022, he was stripped of his military titles and patronages by the late Queen Elizabeth II amid legal action brought by Epstein survivor Virginia Giuffre.
The lawsuit was settled out of court that year. Giuffre passed away in April 2025.
Further scrutiny followed in October 2025 when King Charles III formally removed Andrew’s remaining royal titles amid renewed attention on his ties to Epstein, intensified by the release of Giuffre’s posthumous memoir and related documents. Buckingham Palace also demanded Andrew surrender the lease on Royal Lodge, his longtime residence, with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson expected to find separate accommodations.
In February 2026, Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office linked to allegations that he shared confidential information with Epstein during his tenure as a UK trade envoy. He was released after 11 hours in custody, with the investigation ongoing. Throughout these developments, Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner noted to Fox News Digital that Andrew is experiencing significant distancing from senior family members, impacting his mental health. “Some of his favorite activities, like riding and shooting, may have been curtailed,” Turner said.
“The ongoing police investigation is a continuous worry for him. And still, his soulmate and former wife is being distant.”
He added that Andrew has resorted to unusual methods of relaxation, such as watching planes land on television.
Although the royal family traditionally gathers at Balmoral Castle every summer for private time together, reports indicate that King Charles has not seen Andrew this year, despite their residences being just a mile apart. Turner suggested that Andrew’s refusal of the king’s invitation reflects a mixture of anger, disdain for Charles, and strained relations with other family members, notably Prince William.
Experts agree that Andrew’s public restoration to royal duties is highly unlikely, especially under King Charles and the future reign of Prince William. Fordwich noted that Andrew’s reluctance to attend family events may stem from self-consciousness over his perceived unwelcome status. According to reports, only Prince Edward has visited him recently.
Despite his isolation, Andrew reportedly remains on a confidential government list for royal funeral arrangements-known as “bridge plans”-which are prepared for senior royals. His funeral service is expected to be held at St.
George’s Chapel with burial at the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, Windsor. Retired Rear Admiral Chris Parry, who served alongside Andrew in the Royal Navy, expressed belief that the Navy would honor him with volunteer pallbearers, acknowledging his military service, including his role in the Falklands conflict.
However, some voices, such as attorney Spencer Kuvin who represented Epstein’s victims, argue against public funds covering Andrew’s funeral, calling it “an embarrassment to the Crown.”
As of now, Buckingham Palace has not issued a comment on these reports. Meanwhile, Andrew’s role within the royal family appears increasingly diminished, with his personal and public life marked by ongoing legal troubles and familial estrangement.
