RALEIGH — The Local Government Commission approved more than $814 million across North Carolina for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, PFAS treatment, stormwater improvements, school renovations, public safety facilities, affordable housing and senior living projects during its August meeting.
Funds will finance improvements to Greensboro’s water and sewer system, including upgrades to the T.Z. Osborne Wastewater Treatment Plant and improvements to the Mitchell and Lake Townsend water treatment plants for PFAS removal. Additional improvements will be made to water system resiliency and infrastructure.
“Fifty-two percent of the dollars we spend, capital dollars, are on regulatory compliance,” Director of Water Resources Mike Borchers said discussing increases in Greensboro’s water/sewer rates to account for infrastructure upgrades. “It doesn’t go away. These forever chemicals, we have to upgrade these plants to remove these, first and foremost, for public health.”…
