I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, in an Iranian-American family, where one of our signature dishes is kabob koobideh, or seasoned ground beef grilled on skewers and served with rice. At this point, you might be wondering: “Hold on; aren’t I supposed to be reading an article about burgers?” Stay with me here. The word koobideh refers to ground, pounded meat, and when putting it between two pieces of bread, you essentially have a version of a burger. It’s really, then, no surprise that my family really, really loves the ground-beef classic that we all know and love.
Then there’s Houston’s connection to Texas cattle ranching and beef production. Living in Houston, it’s hard to separate yourself from loving anything with beef. According to the USDA, Texas had 12.1 million cattle as of January 1, 2026, more than any other state and about 14% of the entire U.S. cattle inventory. I also come from a city where eating food is part of our identity. We tend to joke that the only thing to do in Houston is eat at restaurants (this isn’t technically true — Houston boasts amazing museums, too). But our dining scene is, indeed, a powerhouse. According to Visit Houston, the city has more than 13,000 restaurants representing cuisines from more than 70 countries and American regions. Needless to say, we are really proud of our diverse food scene.
I’ve also developed another theory: that a “Houston-style burger” exists. Houstonians associate specific traits with Houston burgers, like their subtly smoky grilled flavor that immediately tastes like home to me. Now, the five burgers below don’t represent every great burger in Houston. Instead, they highlight five unique options that show how Houston’s burger scene reflects its cultural diversity and continues to evolve.
Becks Prime
Just like Chicago’s must-visit deep-dish pizza joints and New York’s pizza-slice scene, Houstonians link food to the city’s identity. And when I think about a Houston burger, Becks Prime comes to mind first and always reminds me of home. The city certainly has fancier burgers, but few evoke the same sense of nostalgia as Becks. If someone asked me to define a “Houston-style burger,” I would send them here first. I ran cross-country when I was younger and spent countless hours running the 3-mile Seymour Lieberman Trail (also just known as the “Memorial Park loop”). I’d finish my runs and always head straight to Becks Prime in the park to promptly replenish the calories I’d just burned…
