Man not in crosswalk struck, killed by vehicle in east Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Investigators say a man has died after he was struck by a car in east Phoenix late Sunday night.

Just before midnight, officers were called to the crash involving a pedestrian near 48th and Van Buren streets. Emergency crews found a man, identified as 44-year-old Sharmarke Ismail, seriously injured and lying in the road. Ismail was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Police believe that Ismail was hit by the vehicle while attempting to cross 48th Street outside of a marked crosswalk. Authorities say the driver involved stayed at the scene and was not impaired at the time of the collision…
