YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY)- As Virginians prepare for Labor Day weekend, the York-Poquoson Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is joining the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), and law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth in recognizing the 25th Anniversary of Virginia’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, encouraging motorists to plan ahead and never drive impaired.
The annual statewide campaign combines public awareness with increased enforcement to reduce impaired driving and save lives during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Through the “What’s the Damage?” initiative, Virginians are reminded that a DUI can cost far more than fines or the loss of a driver’s license–it can cost careers, relationships, reputations, and, most importantly, lives.
The campaign’s message is especially meaningful for prosecutors who routinely see the devastating consequences of impaired driving. Earlier this year, the York-Poquoson Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office secured convictions in a fatal DUI crash that claimed the lives of two individuals, including a pregnant woman, resulting in a 27-year prison sentence.
