The westbound lanes of the Bonnet Carre Spillway Bridge were closed for hours Monday afternoon near mile marker 212 as strong thunderstorms moved through the New Orleans area.
The closure came after an 18-wheeler was overturned by high winds coming off of Lake Pontchartrain, according to the National Weather Service. Traffic was backed up for miles, stretching back as far as the Interstate 10 West and Interstate 310 merge, the Louisiana Department of Transportation reported.
