A little wet weather and clouds have gone a long way in taming the heat. Temperatures Monday were the coolest in the Springfield area since the beginning of the month. But we’re not out of the woods. We’ll enjoy a little more heat relief this week, but a late summer surge is brewing.
For tonight, clouds will thin, and we’re looking at quiet and mostly clear weather through Tuesday. Sunnier skies will equal hotter temperatures Tuesday, with most areas hitting 90°.
The overall pattern hasn’t changed much, though, and another pocket of unsettled weather is expected to spill over the heat dome to our west. This will bring clouds and a chance for showers to the area Tuesday night into Wednesday.

This will continue to keep the heat in check through mid-week. In fact, a weak cool front blowing through the area will keep highs in the upper 80s to low 90s through the end of the week.
Easterly winds in the late-week pattern will help hold off the heat to the west, but a wind shift will develop over the weekend. As the summer ridge shifts back to the east, winds will become more south to southwesterly over the weekend into early next week. This will bring very hot weather back to Missouri and Arkansas.
The hottest readings will be focused west, but everyone will have to contend with highs well into the 90s by Sunday and Monday. Areas closer to I-49 could hit 100°. The hot finish to August may also be hot enough to challenge record highs.
