SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)– The way we convey information to the public regarding severe thunderstorms has gone through a few notable changes over the years…specifically with regard to how we convey who may be affected.
Take yesterday evening as an example. We had four supercells moving south by southeast through Harding and Perkins Counties. Prior to October 1, 2007, these warnings would have encompassed the entirety of both counties, as severe weather warnings were issued based on geopolitical borders.
Very quickly, we can see a simple problem here: Individual storms and many other severe weather events typically don’t affect entire counties. As a result, the old way things were done would cause unnecessary concern for a good number of people…
