A man was shot and killed near Baltimore’s Green Mount Cemetery Monday afternoon, and homicide detectives still have not identified him as they work to piece together what happened. Officers responded to a reported shooting in the 500 block of East North Avenue at 2:14 p.m. and found the unidentified male suffering from a gunshot wound.
The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to WBFF. The Baltimore Police Department reported that the shooting near Green Mount Cemetery left one male dead, and homicide detectives have since assumed control of the investigation. No suspect description or motive has been released.
Historic Cemetery Grounds the Crime Scene
The shooting happened just outside the walls of Green Mount Cemetery, a 68-acre burial ground at 1501 Greenmount Avenue that has bordered East North Avenue since the site was dedicated in 1839 on what was once merchant Robert Oliver’s country estate. The cemetery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, is enclosed by a perimeter stone wall running along North Avenue and holds more than 65,000 graves, according to Wikipedia. East North Avenue itself was once known as Boundary Avenue, marking the northern edge of Baltimore City before the surrounding blocks of Johnston Square and Barclay were filled in with rowhouses, according to Explore Baltimore Heritage.
Homicide detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward. Anonymous tipsters who provide information leading to an arrest and felony indictment can receive a cash reward of up to $2,000, per Annapolis city officials.
A Killing Amid Record-Low Homicide Numbers
Monday’s shooting comes as Baltimore continues to post historically low violent crime figures. The city recorded 60 homicides and 187 non-fatal shootings through August 1, a 25.9 percent decline compared to 81 homicides by the same date in 2025, according to a statement from the Office of Mayor Brandon M. Scott. July alone saw just seven homicides, the fewest for any July on record in the city.
