Miami Man Accused Of Altering Relative’s Utility Check To Steal Over $8,600

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A 33-year-old Miami man was arrested Monday after authorities say he altered a utility dividend check meant for a relative and deposited the funds into his own account.

Luis Albert Alonso was taken into custody on Aug. 24, 2026, following an investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office into fraudulent activity targeting the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative.

According to investigators, Alonso took an FKEC dividend check addressed to one of his relatives, modified the check details, and submitted it via mobile deposit into his personal bank account on two separate occasions. The deposits totaled approximately $8,648…
