HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The death of 45-year-old Joi Brown was ruled not to have happened by suicide, according to testimony from the medical examiner Tuesday afternoon.
Brown was found shot dead in her bedroom in June 2023. It happened in the home on Wendell Drive that she shared with Calvin Jackson, 49.

Jackson is on trial a second time for Brown’s murder. His initial trial in April 2025 for second-degree murder ended with a hung jury. The Commonwealth said Jackson shot and killed Brown after she told him she wanted to end their 19-year relationship. The couple had a daughter.
