Clark County officials are moving forward on a rebuild of the fire station that protects Harry Reid International Airport, backed by $850,000 in newly announced federal funding.
Clark County’s Aviation Department will use the money, matched by county and aviation dollars, to begin a phased construction project on the airport’s Airfield Rescue and Fire Fighting station. The current building dates to 1982 and falls short of modern Federal Aviation Administration standards. U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., announced the funding Aug. 21 alongside Clark County and airport leaders at the station, known as Fire Station 13. The award adds to a broader $6.1 million funding package that also draws on money secured by Rep. Susie Lee, Nevada Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto, and Jacky Rosen.
Harry Reid ranks among the busiest airports in the country, handling nearly 55 million passengers last year. The existing station alone fields about 5,000 emergency calls annually.
