A small South Texas school district has shut down for two days after officials said COVID-19 was spreading rapidly through the district.
San Perlita Independent School District announced Monday that all campuses and school operations would be suspended Tuesday and Wednesday as a precaution. Classes are scheduled to resume Thursday, Aug. 27.
“Due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 within our district, all school operations will be suspended for two days as a precautionary measure to help protect the health and safety of our students, staff and families,” the district said in a social media post. The district has not disclosed how many COVID-19 cases have been reported among students or staff.
San Perlita ISD is a small district in Willacy County, about 55 miles north of Brownsville. It served 174 students during the 2024-25 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.
