Styx and Chicago Bring a Night of Timeless Hits to Morton Amphitheater

Summer nights may be dwindling, but Morton Amphitheater’s ambitious debut concert schedule rolled on Tuesday night with a celebration of classic rock, massive melodies and an almost unbelievable number of hits.

Styx and Chicago brought their Windy City’s Tour to Kansas City, playing to a near-capacity crowd in an evening that featured two legendary bands, top-notch musicianship and enough familiar songs to make the night feel like one giant greatest-hits playlist.

This is a co-headlining tour, with Styx opening the night. And from the opening chords of “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” it was pretty clear that Styx had arrived ready to make a statement.

Styx has become a mainstay in the Kansas City area, playing various local venues over the past several summers, but this performance felt particularly strong. Vocalist and guitarist Tommy Shaw remains one of rock’s great frontmen. At 72, his voice has lost remarkably little of its power, and his charisma is still very much intact…
