BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — More than 600 additional animals left Berkeley County’s shelter system alive during the first year of a partnership with Charleston Animal Society, as euthanasia fell sharply and the county expanded efforts to keep animals out of the shelter in the first place.
Charleston Animal Society reported a 43% decrease in euthanasia since taking over operations at the Berkeley County animal shelter on July 1, 2025. The organization recently presented the first-year results to Berkeley County Council.
