Thieves Didn’t Hack This Lamborghini’s Security System. They Just Pointed a Gun at the Guy Holding the Keys

Nobody bypassed an immobilizer in Old City early Thursday morning. Nobody cloned a key fob, ran a relay attack, or spent forty minutes fighting a steering lock. Three men allegedly walked up to a parking booth on Race Street, broke the glass with a window punch, pointed a handgun at the attendant inside, and asked for two sets of keys. Within moments they were gone, driving off in a Lamborghini and a Porsche that a decade of automotive engineering had made nearly impossible to steal any other way.

That’s the part of this story that a routine police blotter won’t spend much time on, because it isn’t really a crime story. It’s a story about what happens when carmakers get too good at their jobs.

The lock got so good, thieves stopped picking it

Modern exotic cars are absurdly hard to steal through the front door, so to speak. Lamborghini and Porsche, like nearly every automaker since the early 2000s, build in encrypted, rolling-code key fobs paired to engine immobilizers that won’t let the car start without the correct digital handshake. Hot-wiring a Huracan or a 911 the way movies still pretend is possible hasn’t worked in decades.

That engineering did its job so well that it created a new vulnerability nobody put in a spec sheet: the key itself became the only thing worth stealing. Both of those crimes required real technical skill. Thursday’s robbery required none. Why bother defeating a key fob’s encryption when the person holding the real one is standing three feet away?…
