Gladys Knight to Reduce Touring Schedule Amid Health Concerns
Motown icon Gladys Knight, 82, has announced plans to scale back her touring schedule following a series of performances that raised concerns among fans and members of her team. Over the past several months, Knight has been performing both solo and alongside fellow legend Smokey Robinson. However, recent appearances have sparked worry due to moments where Knight appeared disoriented, relied heavily on backup singers, and showed signs of fatigue.
One notable incident occurred during her July 25 show at the Hollywood Bowl. According to sources close to the tour, there were discussions about whether Knight should even take the stage that evening. During her rendition of “Midnight Train to Georgia,” Knight reportedly turned away from the audience and attempted to leave the stage, resisting assistance from a backup singer.
An earlier performance in April in Las Vegas with Smokey Robinson drew even greater concern, with some tour personnel fearing Knight may be exhibiting symptoms consistent with dementia-though no formal diagnosis has been made.
Knight’s husband and manager, William McDowell, acknowledged that she experiences “good days and bad,” but emphasized that singing remains central to her life. “No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing,” McDowell shared.
Fans have been divided over whether Knight should continue performing. At an August 18 concert in Detroit, Knight took multiple breaks backstage and appeared visibly exhausted, leading some attendees to leave early. Comments on social media ranged from heartfelt pleas for her to rest to expressions of respect for her enduring commitment to music.
In response to the concerns and her own reflections, Knight has decided to gradually reduce her performance schedule. McDowell revealed plans to build a facility near their North Carolina home where she can perform with less travel involved. Knight herself released a statement saying, “After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward.”
She expressed gratitude to her fans for their decades of support: “I’d like to take a moment, in advance, to thank all my fans over this last three quarters of a century for making a little girl’s dream come true and supporting her every step of the way. I am immensely grateful to all of you and send my eternal love back to you.”
Despite scaling back, Knight is not stepping away from the stage entirely. “I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road,” she said, signaling her desire to remain connected with audiences as she embraces this new chapter.
