Rupp Arena’s $1 million budget cut reflects nationwide trend away from smaller markets

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Rupp Arena has hosted generations of music superstars, from AC/DC and Elton John to Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen. Now, the venue is cutting $1 million from its budget as fewer big names come through Lexington.

Rupp Arena’s oversight board agreed to cut $1 million from the venue’s operating budget. Assistant General Manager Laura Alexander said due to the current budget and national trends, the projected revenue won’t cover all the concerts originally budgeted for this year.

Rupp Arena’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30, and planning begins in January, meaning the budget is finalized while the venue is still in the middle of its current fiscal year. When leaders planned this year’s budget, they included more than 60 events. Alexander said leaders don’t expect to fill five of those events, so they were cut…
