More Amarillo ISD schools could close as student numbers drop

The Amarillo Independent School District could see more school closures if declining enrollment continues, according to new data on demographics, as officials continue to work on sorting out their next strategic plan, to be presented later this year.

At a recent special meeting of the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees, a demographic report by consulting firm STRIVE Public Policy Resources was presented, with findings shared by STRIVE Managing Director Bob Templeton. The district received the first portion of the firm’s report in June, according to Templeton, and were all related to the Strategic Plan 4.2.3 to maximize utilization of Amarillo schools.

Templeton said that he took a close look at AISD’s capacities, including examining maps of the school buildings along with visiting with principals through surveys.
