1821 — On August 28, 1821, David Brearley, the federal Cherokee agent, wrote from the Cherokee Agency to the Arkansas Gazette disputing a newspaper account that Cherokee leader Walter Webber had murdered Joseph Revoir. Brearley said Revoir, who was associated with the Osage, had been killed as part of the warfare then occurring between Cherokee and Osage groups along the Arkansas frontier. The episode illustrates the violent Cherokee-Osage struggle that affected the Fort Smith region in the early territorial period.
