Downtown Clearwater is synonymous with the Church of Scientology, which is headquartered there. The church itself, and its owners, control an overwhelming proportion of downtown. Over the summer, the city officials moved closer to handing part of downtown’s Garden Avenue to the church.
Save The Garden is pushing back against the proposal allowing the handover, which opens the door for the church “to build its long-planned flagship L. Ron Hubbard Hall, an all-glass auditorium and plaza, on the property,” according to WUSF.
“The move means the general public may lose the legal right to drive, walk or travel on the road, but the church must open the hall within six years,” the station added…
