HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — A partial lunar eclipse was visible over the Hampton Roads region early Friday morning as WAVY viewers shared spectacular images of the moon (If you captured images of the lunar eclipse, you can share them here).
Upcoming lunar eclipse to feature Sturgeon moon
Maximum eclipse was reached at 12:12 a.m., in which 96.2% of the moon was covered in Earth’s shadow. This very deep partial lunar eclipse was expected to be seen, weather conditions permitting, across all of North America and South America, as well as parts of Africa, Europe and Antarctica.
The entire eclipse lasted five hours and 38 minutes, but the moon only had red hues to it when Earth’s umbra — the central part of its shadow — is covering the moon. That occurred for three hours and 18 minutes, and began at 10:33 p.m. and ended at 1:52 a.m.
While 41% of the world’s population was able to see at least part of the eclipse, just 15% will be able to see the entirety of the eclipse — that area included the Hampton Roads region.
