The passing of Dolly Parton on Tuesday saddened the singer’s army of fans around the world. But in New Orleans, a group of women were especially moved by the news. For five years, the Krewe of Dolly has celebrated Parton by marching in Carnival parades costuming in platinum wigs and glittering gowns in tribute to the cultural icon.
The 700-member krewe hopes to lead a memorial second-line on Sept. 5 (on 9/5 in the spirit of her hit “9 to 5”) to express their continued devotion to the ever-affable, feminist superstar. Annie Wentz, founding president of the krewe, said the Dollys have applied for a parade permit and await word from City Hall to proceed.
Wentz said the group hopes to gather so members will be able to grieve Parton’s death and celebrate her legacy together…
