PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man who fled the U.S. after being arrested for planning to distribute drugs in Portland was sentenced on Wednesday, officials have announced.
Abel Resendiz-Villa will spend 72 months in federal prison and serve another three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon. The 42-year-old man was initially indicted more than six years ago, but authorities said his sentencing faced a major delay after he escaped to Mexico.

“Resendiz-Villa tried to escape the consequences of his criminal choices,” U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford said in a statement. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office sees their cases through. As seen in this case, even fleeing the country won’t allow drug dealers to flee consequences.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office cited court documents revealing that Resendiz-Villa previously trafficked meth, heroin and counterfeit oxycodone pills into the country.
