When MGM began production on Gene Kelly’s “Singin’ in the Rain” in 1951, the studio viewed it as just another musical project. Upon its release in 1952, the film achieved only moderate box office success and received just two Oscar nominations, hardly signaling the classic status it would later earn.
Today, the film’s reputation is nothing short of legendary. It boasts a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was named the greatest movie musical of all time by a panel of over 500 film industry professionals for the American Film Institute in 2006. Beyond musicals, it ranks among AFI’s top five greatest American films overall and has twice appeared on the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound list of the ten best films ever made.
Much of the film’s most challenging choreography fell to Debbie Reynolds, who was only 19 and had no formal dance training when cast alongside Kelly and Donald O’Connor. A former gymnast, Reynolds committed to rigorous daily rehearsals to keep up with her seasoned co-stars. At one point, overwhelmed by frustration, she broke down in tears and hid under a piano-where she was comforted by Fred Astaire, who was filming nearby.
The demanding “Good Morning” sequence alone took a grueling 15 hours to shoot and required more than 40 takes, leaving Reynolds’ feet bleeding by day’s end. She later reflected that making “Singin’ in the Rain” and giving birth were the two toughest experiences of her life.
Reynolds wasn’t the only cast member to endure physical hardship. Donald O’Connor reportedly spent several days in bed recovering after performing his physically intense “Make ‘Em Laugh” routine. Meanwhile, Gene Kelly famously pushed through the production of the iconic title number despite battling a 103-degree fever, refusing to halt filming even as he visibly struggled.
