IKEA to Close South Charlotte “Plan and Order” Store on August 30
IKEA has announced it will close its Providence Road location in South Charlotte on August 30, just two years after the store opened. The 356,000-square-foot site in University City will be the first of the retailer’s two North Carolina stores to shut, leaving the University City store as the state’s only remaining IKEA.
Unlike traditional IKEA outlets, the Providence Road store did not sell furniture or serve the chain’s iconic Swedish meatballs. Instead, it was part of IKEA’s “plan and order” concept, where customers could consult with staff to design interior spaces and pick up online orders. This format was introduced as a U.S. growth strategy aimed at meeting customers’ evolving shopping preferences.
IKEA has not provided specific reasons for the closure but emphasized a continued commitment to enhancing shopping experiences through home delivery, pick-up services, and digital platforms. The company has also stated it is focusing on building a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable future in the U.S. market.
Customers currently working on kitchen, room, or business planning projects at the South Charlotte location are advised to complete their orders before the store closes or transfer their plans to another IKEA store or online with a remote planner.
