Shirley MacLaine, who famously starred alongside Dolly Parton in the 1989 classic film Steel Magnolias, shared a heartfelt statement following the beloved singer and actress’s recent passing.
At 92, MacLaine portrayed the fiery and affluent Louisa “Ouiser” Boudreaux, while Parton took on the role of Truvy Jones, the kind-hearted beauty salon owner known for her memorable lines like, “Smile! It increases your face value” and “I don’t trust anyone who does their own hair.
I don’t think it’s natural.” The film also featured notable performances from Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, and Daryl Hannah.
Reflecting on Parton’s death on August 25, MacLaine told People magazine, “God sent her to us, and she has returned home.” She was recently seen in Malibu, where this tribute followed renewed attention on a candid remark MacLaine once made about another Steel Magnolias co-star.
Sally Field also honored Parton with a touching message alongside a photo of the cast: “If there are truly angels on earth, then we have just lost one. Dolly Parton.

Steel Magnolias was filmed entirely in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where Parton’s legacy remains deeply felt. Sarah Zeagler, tourism manager at the Natchitoches Visitor’s Bureau, described Parton as a “true steel magnolia” – embodying kindness, generosity, and resilience.
“For somebody who came from nothing, it just speaks volumes to me,” Zeagler said. “She truly is the embodiment of everything good.”
Local business owner Cathy Willett, whose store Pied a Terre was featured in the film, shared her sorrow: “I’m very, very sad. She’s just somebody that you never… you can’t imagine her not being around.” In tribute, Willett has displayed a portrait of Parton outside her shop.
