A Michigan family is thankful for the outpouring of love and support they received after the death of 13-year-old Lainey Scroggs.

Kids and classmates in the Lambertville community came together to start “Lemonade for Lainey” after Lainey died on Aug. 12 following a medical emergency just before starting the eighth grade at Bedford Junior High School, ABC affiliate KKTV reported earlier this month.

“My family cannot begin to express how deeply grateful we are to our family, friends, and the entire Bedford Community for surrounding us with so much love and support during the most heartbreaking time of our lives,” the Scroggs family tells PEOPLE in a statement…
