Shrinkflation has struck again, this time catching the attention of Trader Joe’s customers-this time over something unexpected: the size of their grocery bags.
A shopper recently shared an Instagram video highlighting that her usual grocery haul no longer fit comfortably into a single Trader Joe’s bag. Curious, she asked a store employee if the bags had been made shorter, and was told they indeed had.
Armed with a tape measure, she compared an older paper bag to a new one and found a striking difference: the new bags were about four inches shorter. “Four inches is not a small amount,” she remarked, emphasizing the noticeable shrinkage.
The employee reportedly explained that the change came in response to customer complaints about the handles on the taller bags not being sturdy enough, so shortening the bags was intended as a fix. Trader Joe’s has yet to officially confirm this reasoning.
What irked the shopper most was the lack of any public announcement about the change. “Why don’t [you] just say we’re making smaller bags?”
she quipped. “Doing it in the dead of night feels a bit sneaky for Trader Joe’s.”
This observation didn’t go unnoticed by others. Some customers commented that with rising prices everywhere, smaller bags create the illusion of carrying more items.
Others spotted a shift in texture-from a rough, rustic feel to a smoother, glossier finish. Some speculated the company might be standardizing bag sizes across all locations, noting that smaller bags were already in use in some West Coast stores.
Meanwhile, Trader Joe’s is making much bigger headlines with its nationwide expansion. The company recently announced plans to open nine new stores in states including Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Utah. This rollout is part of a broader strategy to launch 21 new locations across 13 states in just six months, bringing their unique grocery offerings to more communities than ever before.
