YUKON, Okla. – The City of Yukon is ready to celebrate its connection to the Mother Road. Jenna Roberson joins News 9 to discuss Rock the Route, a celebration for Route 66 Centennial.
What is Rock the Route?
Roberson: Rock the Route is the celebration that’s been going on in Yukon for a decade now. We actually started it in 2016 to ramp up specifically for the 100th celebration of Route 66, which is this year. It’s so exciting. So we’re really looking forward and have a lot of amazing things planned.
What makes this celebration so special for Yukon?
Roberson: Like I said, we’ve been kind of ramping up towards this 100th anniversary celebration, so this year we have some extra special things planned, including a drone show. It was such a hit at Freedom Fest, so we’re bringing it back and it’s got a lot of surprises, both local things and just Route 66 Americana-type surprises in the show.
What entertainment can people look forward to?
Roberson: Absolutely. So we’ve got a great lineup this year. So the headliner is Josh Weathers. He’s performed at the Grand Ole Opry. Super excited to have him. And then we’re also excited for our special guest. It is Smokin’ Oaks. And they are some Yukon boys. They’re making a name for themselves, but they’re actually named after a Yukon neighborhood. So it’s pretty amazing. So in addition to that, we’ll have some children’s activities earlier in the day There’s plenty of reason to come out early before even the bands hit the stage and it’ll be a wonderful night.
What should families know before coming out?
Roberson: One thing I think that would be a great thing to know this year is that we have a shuttle service. I know that’s always been kind of a question, and we have wonderful local businesses that open up their parking lots. But this year, starting at 6 p.m., we’ve partnered with Yukon Middle School, and they’re allowing people to come park, and we will have shuttles that take them back and forth through the event…
