The Pierce County Council voted to start the process to extend an existing moratorium on private and public involuntary detention centers.
The detention centers include facilities like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. The item was part of the council’s consent agenda at their Aug. 25 meeting, which contains an array of non-controversial items that the council votes on unanimously and all at once.
The council’s vote sets the stage for a public hearing on the topic on Aug. 31, and council members will vote in September on whether to finalize the extension.
