Oak Ridge Schools enrollment grows as national numbers fall

Oak Ridge Schools is experiencing a growth in enrollment compared with last school year, while also surpassing some pre-COVID enrollment levels.

Citing enrollment data from the Tennessee Department of Education, officials with Oak Ridge Schools announced in a news release that the city schools’ student populations have grown steadily following the enrollment disruption experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Enrollment increased from approximately 4,500 students in 2020-21 to 4,853 students in 2024-25, representing growth of nearly 8% in four years. The district’s enrollment during that period also exceeded its pre-COVID level of 4,495 students in 2018–19.
  • Oak Ridge Schools experienced a modest enrollment dip during the last school year, ending the year with 4,694 students. However, early enrollment activity for this school year shows renewed growth. Oak Ridge Schools has 4,795 students enrolled in August — an increase of 101 students since June 4.

The local trend stands in contrast to the national picture. Public school enrollment across the United States fell sharply during the pandemic and has not returned to pre-pandemic levels, according to the local school system’s news release. National Center for Education Statistics data show that U.S. public school enrollment declined from approximately 50.8 million students in fall 2019 to 49.5 million in fall 2023, a decrease of approximately 2.5 percent. This national data also projects continued demographic pressure, with national public elementary and secondary enrollment expected to decline approximately 5% between 2022 and 2031, primarily because of a projected decline in the school-age population.

“Enrollment is one of many indicators of the strength of a school system and the confidence families have in their community,” Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers said in the news release. “At a time when many public school systems are navigating declining school-age populations and changing demographics, Oak Ridge Schools has experienced meaningful growth since the pandemic. We believe families continue to see Oak Ridge as a community where their children can receive an exceptional education and be prepared for college, career and life success.”…
