Country music icon Dolly Parton transformed the heartbreak of not being able to have children into a lifelong dedication to nurturing and supporting the younger generation, according to a heartfelt tribute from her great-niece.
Lainey Mae Parton shared touching reflections on how Dolly embraced her extended family as her own children, encouraging them relentlessly to pursue their dreams. “Because she couldn’t have kids of her own, she always made us feel like we were hers. She loved us that way, and I’ll forever be grateful for that,” Lainey wrote.
The tribute came after Dolly’s private funeral, where she was laid to rest beside her husband of nearly six decades, Carl Dean, following her passing at age 80.
In an emotional Instagram post, Lainey began, “This is a really hard post for me to make. I wanted to wait until after my granny was laid to rest yesterday before I tried to put any of this into words.”
She continued, “From the time I was little, my granny always had a way of making me feel like I was enough. She never made my dreams feel too big or made me feel like I couldn’t do something.
She believed in me before I even knew how to believe in myself.”
Dolly, who never had biological children due to health challenges including endometriosis and a partial hysterectomy, often spoke about her desire to become a mother when she was younger. However, she believed that not having children allowed her the freedom to build her remarkable career and extend her care and support to children everywhere.
One of 12 siblings, Dolly also played a key role in raising her younger relatives. Beyond her family, she founded the Imagination Library in 1995, a book-gifting program that has since delivered hundreds of millions of free books to children worldwide.
Lainey recalled a special moment when Dolly invited her to sing on the “Smoky Mountain DNA” album as a nervous high school freshman, making her feel “safe, confident, and like I belonged right there beside her.” Later on, Dolly supported Lainey’s choice to attend beauty school, helping fund her training and career launch. “She didn’t just tell me to chase my dreams, she helped me get there,” Lainey said.
Grateful for every opportunity she shared with her beloved “Aunt Dolly,” including appearing in a movie together, Lainey said she will cherish recordings and mementos that keep her feeling close to Dolly.
She concluded her tribute with heartfelt words: “I feel incredibly lucky that I got to call her my granny. Thank you for always believing in me, loving me, and making me feel like I could do anything.
I love you, Granny. Always.”
