POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Polk County grandmother will remain behind bars after leaving her granddaughter in a hot car, resulting in the child’s death, according to law enforcement.
A judge ruled that 74-year-old Karen Benyard would not be released after her pretrial detention hearing Monday afternoon.

“A baby is deceased, and there are no conditions of release that I can put into place to protect the community from risk of harm,” ruled Judge Cassandra Denmark of the 10th Judicial Circuit.
