KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Type One Energy officially has Tennessee’s first license for commercial fusion.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) and Governor Bill Lee announced Monday that they had issued the state’s first fusion-specific byproduct material license to the Knoxville-based company, which plans to use the former Bull Run Fossil Plant for its nuclear fusion machines.

“As the global epicenter of nuclear energy, Tennessee is building the workforce, infrastructure and regulatory framework needed to lead the next generation of nuclear innovation,” said Lee. “By creating a clear path for emerging technologies like fusion, we’re advancing the reliable, abundant American energy we’ll need for generations to come.”
