A Salem sweet shop with a viral pastry is about to open near Portland

Life in Beaverton is about to get a little bit sweeter.

Sewell Sweets, a Salem cake shop, is adding a location on the ground floor of the Modera Beaverton apartment building on SW Broadway.

Husband-and-wife team Cat and Chad Sewell opened their original store in downtown Salem in 2022, realizing Cat’s dream that dates back to when she was 13. “Owning a cake shop has been everything I’ve wanted to get to,” she said, adding that she’s always loved both art and food.

That combination has been a big draw in the form of their Mousse Crunch pastries, which are a take on a French dessert called trompe-l’œil (to deceive the eye). They’re made to look very convincing, often as fruit such as mangoes or apples. A hardened shell pops with an audible crunch when bitten into, revealing a soft and sweet interior.
