19 years for Loop bank robber who fired shots at guard, dropped cash during getaway

A Waukegan man who robbed two downtown Chicago banks in the span of one week in March 2023, including a Loop holdup during which he fired nine shots at a security guard, has been sentenced to 19 years in federal prison.

The first robbery occurred on March 3 at a Chase Bank at 401 North Clark Street in River North. Displaying a handgun he stole from a car in Naperville the night before, Jawad Hakeem ordered two customers to lie face down in the lobby and threatened to shoot them if a teller did not hand over money, prosecutors said in a court filing. He left with $2,002.

Six days later, he entered the Fifth Third Bank at 1 South Wacker Drive shortly before 3 p.m. and pointed the same gun at two tellers, according to a government sentencing memorandum…
