In the remote town of Wales, Alaska, a tragic encounter between a mother, her infant son, and a polar bear has marked the first fatal polar bear attack on humans in over three decades.
Alaska, known for its brutal winters and vast Arctic landscapes, presents a challenging environment for its residents. Summer Myomick, a 24-year-old mother familiar with these harsh conditions, was navigating the snowy streets of Wales with her 1-year-old son, Clyde Ongtowasruk, in January 2023. Wrapped tightly against the biting winds from the nearby Bering Sea, she was making a short trip from a family visit to the local health clinic, only 150 yards away.
Visibility was severely limited by swirling snow, and as Myomick passed the Kingikmiut school, a massive polar bear emerged from the blizzard and launched a deadly attack on her and her son. The school principal witnessed the distressing event and quickly placed the building on lockdown to shield the children inside from the harrowing scene.
Local staff and residents bravely rushed outside, attempting to fend off the bear with shovels. Though they momentarily succeeded, the bear then turned its attention toward them, forcing everyone back indoors. The principal’s quick actions in securing the school entrance likely prevented further injuries.
With no law enforcement present in the small community, an unidentified local took the perilous step of fatally shooting the bear to end the attack. Wales, a historic Inupiat whaling village with around 150 residents, sits near the westernmost point of the U.S. mainland, about 50 miles from Russia. The town is accessible only by plane or boat in summer and by snowmobile in winter.
Experts note that polar bears, whose primary prey includes seals, walruses, and beluga whales, do sometimes see humans as potential prey. The shrinking sea ice habitat, a consequence of climate change, has led to increased bear sightings ashore in recent years, raising concerns for both wildlife and local communities.
