FBI warns of rising nihilistic violent extremism in South Carolina, urges parents to watch

LEXINGTON, S.C. (WACH) — Federal agents are warning families across South Carolina about what they describe as a growing online threat targeting children and teens, as the FBI says “nihilistic violent extremism” is on the rise.

The FBI held a free community awareness event in Lexington on Saturday to help parents better understand the threat and learn warning signs to watch for.

Nihilistic violent extremists, or NVEs, are online groups that promote violence, suicide and destruction, according to the FBI. Officials said the activity can begin with something as simple as “a post, a video, or a message online,” then escalate as vulnerable young people are targeted…
