(KRON) — A fisherman who was seriously injured Tuesday after a wave swept him off the rocks and into the ocean was rescued by a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, authorities said.
While the injured fisherman was able to pull himself out of the water at Fort Ross State Park, the surrounding steep cliffs prevented emergency crews from reaching him on the ground, according to the sheriff’s office. SCSO’s Henry-1 helicopter responded at 12:45 p.m. and used the fisherman’s phone’s GPS coordinates to locate him.
Using a 100-foot longline, a tactical flight officer was flown to the fisherman and secured him into a hot seat rescue device. The fisherman was then flown to awaiting crews at the fort. After immediate medical care by paramedics, he was flown to a local trauma center.
