South Carolina congressional candidate Courtney McClain is criticizing Spartanburg County’s newly approved data center moratorium after officials excluded a major project already under construction from the one-year pause.
McClain, who is running for the U.S.House in South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, has made the proposed NorthMark data center a central issue in her campaign, pointing to concerns over its projected waterconsumption and its proximity to area homes.
“It is time to take action that center the people and not the profits of techcorporations,” McClain said in a video posted to social media.
Her comments came after Spartanburg County Council voted 5-1 on Sept. 21 to approve a one-year moratorium on new data center development. The measure, however, does not stop the Valara data center on South Pine Street, which is already under construction.
