Unlicensed driver from Honduras involved in crash at shopping plaza in The Villages

A 21-year-old native of Honduras was arrested for driving without a license following a two-vehicle crash at a busy shopping plaza in The Villages.

The Wildwood Police Department responded to the crash shortly after 5:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, near Pinellas Plaza at the intersection of Burnsed Boulevard and Sarasota Street. The collision involved a black 2026 Mazda and a dark blue 2005 Chevy Silverado, according to an arrest report.

When an officer attempted to identify the drivers, Edson I. Portilla Ayala of Wildwood presented a Honduran passport. A dispatcher with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office ran his information through the system and confirmed he did not possess a Florida driver’s license.

When a second officer arrived to take over the crash investigation, Portilla Ayala admitted that he has lived in Wildwood for four years but had never obtained a valid Florida driver’s license…
