HARAHAN, La. (WVUE) – Kingfish Boxing Club offers free boxing lessons to children starting at age 8, after Hurricane Ida forced the non-profit out of its original home in Kenner.
Coach Axel Murillo said children must apply and are interviewed about their grades and behavior before being accepted. Students who use their hands outside the gym face instant expulsion.
“We interview them for their grades, their behavior,” Murillo said. “They cannot use their hands outside of the gym if they do their instant expulsion, their food. They have to learn how to eat better. You know, one of the craziest ones is that I ask them all, almost nine out of ten of them, don’t eat vegetables. So if you don’t eat vegetables, you can’t come here. It’s a big rule.”…
