BYRON, Ga. (WGXA) — A 24-year-old Byron woman faces up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to a conspiracy to commit bank fraud involving a social media “check-washing” operation that trafficked hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen mail.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia, the 24-year-old woman, identified as Mikela Kendrick, and another individual obtained numerous checks they had stolen from the mail between August 2024 and September 2025. They then completed a process known as “check washing,” in which they removed the payee’s names and dollar amounts from the stolen checks and altered them.
