RICHMOND, Va—- Richmond Public Schools launched the first of nine community meetings Tuesday night, focused on a new facilities modernization plan as the district grapples with aging buildings and a massive funding gap.
RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras said the average school building in the district is 62 years old, and about a quarter of RPS schools are more than 100 years old.
“The reality is that across all of our schools, we have hundreds of millions of dollars of maintenance needs, and we have only a fraction of that available to address those needs. In a typical year, we get about 2.5 million dollars for maintenance,” Kamras said…
