Sports team owners want Cuyahoga County to raise the sales tax, again, for stadium repairs

Cuyahoga County residents are already dealing with soaring property tax bills. The county’s sales tax rate is already the highest in Ohio. And now, if a proposal quietly circulating among local officials gets traction, everyone person who buys anything in the county could soon be chipping in even more cash to fix the stadiums used by two teams owned by billionaires.

The hosts of Today in Ohio said Monday that enough is enough. Rather than slam county taxpayers with an even bigger burden, hosts say the needed money should come froma substantial increase on taxes on tickets for events at the arena and baseball stadium.

Host Courtney Astolfi that county officials are weighing two competing ideas to fund repairs at Progressive Field and Rocket Arena. One of those ideas — which appears to come directly from the teams — would create a new 0.15% sales tax, pushing Cuyahoga County’s already state-leading rate up to 8.15%.
